Three things about this code, and all three matter

Under §4.97, DC 6502, deviated nasal septum is:

Why "traumatic only" is the thing to notice

It makes the mechanism part of the criteria rather than only part of the service-connection question. If the record does not show a traumatic origin, this code is not the one — whatever the obstruction measures.

So the evidence has two jobs: establish the trauma, and establish the obstruction. Service records, treatment records from the time, and a clear account of what happened do the first. Examination findings and imaging do the second.

If the obstruction is there but the trauma is not

A septum deviation that is not traumatic may still matter — through another code, or as part of the picture in a rhinitis or sinusitis claim. What it does not do is reach DC 6502.

Overlapping nasal conditions need a §4.14 analysis before separate evaluations are assumed. The ENT DBQ collects findings across this group.
